But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went on board， to go with them to Tarshish， away from the presence of the Lord. |
约拿却起来，逃往他施去躲避耶和华。下到约帕，遇见一只船，要往他施去。他就给了船价，上了船，要与船上的人同往他施去躲避耶和华。 |
可是约拿却起来，要逃往他施去，躲避耶和华；他下到约帕，找到了一只要开往他施去的船；他给了钱，就上船（“上船”原文作“下船”），要和他们同往他施去，离开耶和华。 |

But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa， where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare， he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD. |

Then the mariners were afraid， and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. |
水手便惧怕，各人哀求自己的神。他们将船上的货物抛在海中，为要使船轻些。约拿已下到底舱，躺卧沉睡。 |

All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck， where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. |

Then the sailors said to each other， "Come， let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity." They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. |

Then they said to him， "Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?" |

Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him， "What is this that you have done!" For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord， because he had told them. |

Then they said to him， "What shall we do to you， that the sea may quiet down for us?" For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. |

Nevertheless， the men rowed hardt to get back to dry land， but they could not， for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. |

Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city -- a visit required three days. |

The word reachedt the king of Nineveh， and he arose from his throne， removed his robe， covered himself with sackcloth， and sat in ashes. |

And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh， "By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast， herd nor flock， taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water， |

And he prayed to the Lord and said， "O Lord， is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful， slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love， and relenting from disaster. |
就祷告耶和华说，耶和华阿，我在本国的时候，岂不是这样说吗？我知道你是有恩典，有怜悯的神，不轻易发怒，有丰盛的慈爱，并且后悔不降所说的灾，所以我急速逃往他施去。 |
就向耶和华祷告，说：“耶和华啊！我还在本国的时候，不是这样说过吗？我知道你是有恩典有怜悯的神，不轻易发怒，并且有丰盛的慈爱，转意不降灾祸，所以我才急忙逃往他施去。 |
所以他祈禱說：「上主啊，在我離開家鄉以前，我不是說你一定會這樣做嗎？就因這緣故，我盡了所能要逃往他施！我知道你是慈悲憐憫的上帝。你不輕易發怒，滿有仁慈，常改變心意不懲罰人。 |
He prayed to the LORD， "O LORD， is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God， slow to anger and abounding in love， a God who relents from sending calamity. |

Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city and made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade， till he should see what would become of the city. |

约拿出了城，在城东坐下；他在那里搭了一座棚，坐在棚荫之下，要看看那城究竟怎样。 |

Jonah went out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter， sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. |

Now the Lord God appointed a plantt and made it come up over Jonah， that it might be a shade over his head， to save him from his discomfort.t So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant. |
耶和华神安排一棵蓖麻，使其发生高过约拿，影儿遮盖他的头，救他脱离苦楚。约拿因这棵蓖麻大大喜乐。 |
耶和华神安排一棵蓖麻，使它长起来高过约拿，成了阴影遮盖他的头，免他受苦；约拿因这棵蓖麻，就大大欢畅。 |

Then the LORD God provided a vine and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort， and Jonah was very happy about the vine. |

But when dawn came up the next day， God appointed a worm that attacked the plant， so that it withered. |
次日黎明，神却安排一条虫子咬这蓖麻，以致枯槁。 |
次日黎明的时候，神安排一条虫子，蛀蚀这棵蓖麻，蓖麻就枯槁了。 |
但是，第二天清晨，上帝叫一條蟲來咬這棵樹，樹就枯死了。 |
But at dawn the next day God provided a worm， which chewed the vine so that it withered. |

When the sun rose， God appointed a scorching east wind， and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint. And he asked that he might die and said， "It is better for me to die than to live." |
日头出来的时候，神安排炎热的东风。日头曝晒约拿的头，使他发昏，他就为自己求死，说，我死了比活着还好。 |
日出的时候，神又安排炎热的东风。烈日晒在约拿的头上，以致发昏，他就为自己求死，说：“我死了比活着还好。” |

When the sun rose， God provided a scorching east wind， and the sun blazed on Jonah''s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die， and said， "It would be better for me to die than to live." |

But God said to Jonah， "Do you do well to be angry for the plant?" And he said， "Yes， I do well to be angry， angry enough to die." |

And the Lord said， "You pity the plant， for which you did not labor， nor did you make it grow， which came into being in a night and perished in a night. |

何况这尼尼微大城，其中不能分辨左手右手的有十二万多人，并有许多牲畜。我岂能不爱惜呢？ |
何况这尼尼微大城，其中不晓得分辨左右手的有十二万多人，并且有许多牲畜，我怎能不爱惜呢？” |
那麼，我不是更應該憐憫尼尼微這座大城嗎？畢竟在這城裏有十二萬連左右手都分不清的人，並且還有許多牲畜呢！」 |
